Moving tips and advice
| 1) |
Moving house can give you that rare opportunity to de-clutter your house, loft and garage, it’s often worthwhile to hire a skip if its been a long time since the last clear-out. |
| |
|
| 2) |
When packing, try to use only double-walled boxes; although the single wall variety are cheaper they tend to sag much more readily when moved or stacked. Be very careful not to put too much weight in any one box! |
| |
|
| 3) |
Keep all your passport, driving licence, bank cards, medical details and pet documents at hand - these can be very difficult to find in an emergency. |
| |
|
| 4) |
If your move is a local one, it often makes sense to arrange for your pets and any small children to stay with friends or relatives during the moving day. |
| |
|
| 5) |
Washing machines should be disconnected at least a day before the move - and any waste water drained away into a bowl or bucket. Likewise, the fridge and/or freezer should be fully defrosted before being moved. Please also remember not to plug in for several hours after moving in - to allow for the gases to settle down. |
| |
|
| 6) |
Large items of furniture, particularly beds and wardrobes, will invariably need to be dismantled before being moved - make sure you’ve given yourself plenty of time for this, and be careful to identify all the joints (to assist with re-assembly). It’s usually best to separate all the nuts, bolts, washers and other fixings to prevent loss, and to keep these readily available for use at the other end. |
| |
|
| 7) |
Pot plants should ideally be placed in open-top boxes, or at least make sure that the pots are wrapped in newspaper- to prevent any soil or water spills. |
| |
|
| 8) |
In addition to taking last-minute meter readings, and notifying all of your utility providers, don’t forget to cancel the milk & newspapers etc., and return any library books. |
| |
